Photographer Steve Bloom: from wildlife to the slums of Nairobi
Award-winning photographer, Steve Bloom, became a wildlife photographer in the early Nineties and his pictures are published all over the world. Born in Cape Town, he first used the camera to document the injustices of life in South Africa during the apartheid years before moving to England, where he co-founded one of London’s leading photographic special effects companies.
But it was wildlife that was to become his passion and bring him his greatest accolades. As well as his work being featured in magazines ranging from the National Geographic to Time, Steve Bloom’s own books have been published in twenty languages. Recently, his free outdoor exhibitions promoting environmental issues have been attracting millions of visitors in city centres throughout Europe.
But Steve Bloom’s latest book has taken him away from the jungles, deserts and oceans of the animal world into very different territory. Published this month, Trading Places: The Merchants of Nairobi offers a colourful and fascinating insight into life for some of Africa’s poorest urban communities.
Dany Mitzman’s been talking to Steve Bloom about how an internationally renowned wildlife photographer came to photograph the slums of Nairobi.
